Liza Santy bought her prime Scottsdale home for $110,000 when she moved in 31 years ago. The half-acre lot and 3,500-square-foot home is worth considerably more now, and Santy loves it even more now that her husband of six years, Dan Santy, moved in 10 years ago and they did considerable renovations two years ago to make it their own.
“This is our sanctuary,” said Liza Santy. “I wanted to move in here because our neighborhood is a hidden jewel” near the Old Town Scottsdale and Scottsdale Fashion Square area.
Renovations to the 1962 home came with entertaining and family in mind. The couple have five adult children together, ranging in age from 22 to 34 years old, and also host Liza’s mother for extended stays around the holiday.
“The kitchen is our favorite room and the star of the house,” said Dan Santy, the president and CEO of Santy Integrated Inc., a Scottsdale-based advertising and marketing agency. “I’m a novice wine collector, and a bit of a glass snob, so this holds one of my favorite parts of the house: the bar.”
While Liza is more shabby chic in her design, Dan enjoys contemporary. The two married their styles in the recent renovations.
“I like clean and minimal,” Dan said. “And we love entertaining with family and friends.”
Liza said the family room, kitchen and living room area has held up to 75 people for one of Dan’s work parties.
A master suite was added about 20 years ago, but the new renovations included modern updates to the bedroom, adjoining sun room, extended bathroom and walk-in closet, which used to be the bathroom.
“We wanted it to be warm and contemporary,” Liza said. “We’re trying to bring everything current to this style.”
An extra room was turned into an exercise room, with Peloton spin bikes that feature live and streaming video options for scenic or instructor-lead rides. The room also has an elliptical and a bench with free weights.
“We both exercise every day,” said Liza, a former fitness and spin instructor.
The renovations also included an updated bathroom for the mother’s suite, a room for Liza’s 97-year-old mom, Rhetta Sweeney. She lives in Las Vegas with her son, but splits her time between staying with her daughter and Lake Tahoe.
An extra guest room, and a backyard with a BBQ, fireplace and pool with built-in slide and jacuzzi are prime for entertaining family and friends.
The pool and backyard renovations were added about 20 years ago, Liza said.
